In our contemporary, post Christian world, reading the Bible publicly just seems too outdated. We are far too sophisticated for it and too intellectually progressive for such a public demonstration of faith.

It’s okay to privately have your religion but surely, you don’t want to do this kind of thing publicly? Not here in our well informed, all-inclusive world that is falling apart right around us. It is being racked by terrorism and war and that the really smart people are saying, is probably going to get worse or will continue at this rate throughout your lifetime. Get comfortable with the fact that this is the way it’s going to be for quite a while. But I have a better idea. What about doing something about it?

This is the very environment in which we need to publicly read the Bible! Our world needs God’s help to transform it. We are in a mess and the sooner we realize and accept it, calling out to God for help, the quicker our world will change. The problem isn’t the circumstances. The problem is that we don’t want to acknowledge that God is the answer for this disaster nor are we willing to pay the price to ask him to change it.

Reading the scriptures publicly is a way to acknowledge that His Book is the answer for our world and the means to not only transform our lives but our cultures as well. I am not advocating for a Christian nation. I am saying that godly people who walk out the commandments of His Word transform the culture that they live in.

I have participated in a number of public Bible readings. It is a great honor. I encourage you to join one on November 12th as we honor God’s Word. And if there isn’t one in your area, make it happen.
